The simplest car gadgets are often the best as well as being the most useful in the long term.

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is just one of these kind of accessories.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, and in turn will help your tyres to last a lot longer.

The clever little innovation is available from AutoStar Ltd on St John’s Road in Pembroke where installation of the system takes place.

Four little sensors are attached to the rim of each wheel arch and they relay pressure information wirelessly to a display screen that is plugged into the cigarette lighter.

The display gives you a read out of exactly what the pressure of each tyre is, and when the tyre’s pressure goes below the required level it gives the pressure read out in red.

Clevie Simmons, who runs AutoStar, believes the monitoring system will prove a big success in Bermuda and help drivers to save money.

He said: “The purpose of the system is to keep you aware of the each tyre’s pressure at all times.

“A lot of people in Bermuda are not aware that you lose 1lb of pressure for every 10 degree temperature change.

“Depending on the time of year, especially at this time of year at the moment, this can have a considerable effect on the pressure of your tyres.

“You could easily lose 2lb in a day, which has a significant effect on the general wear and tear on the wheel as well as how safe the wheels are to drive on.

“People in Bermuda are not accustomed to checking their tyre pressures weekly which is what they should do.”

The monitoring system is manufactured by Orange Electronic and has been used across Europe.

It costs $325 for the system, and a further $80 to get it installed at AutoStar in Pembroke.

Mr Simmons said: “Installation takes around an hour and a half at our garage.

“It could be longer depending on the type of tyres we are dealing with on the car.

“There is more and more expenditure on car tyres these days and many people buy new wheels every time they go and get their car tested.

“In these economic times a device like this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

“If you keep your tyre pressure at the right level it reduces the general wear and tear and it will last longer. It really is as simple as that.”

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems are now in stock at AutoStar.
