The new Chery Tiggo will fill a major gap in the Bermuda market for a mid-price, full-size SUV.

With new versions of popular models such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tuscon now too big to meet Bermuda’s size restrictions, the last two years have seen the sub-$40,000 TCD H-Class market plunge from 285 cars sold in 2009 to zero in 2012.

“There is a gaping hole in the market,” said Michael Butler, Bermuda Motors general manager.

“While the economy has certainly forced some people to look for smaller, cheaper alternatives, many families still want an SUV and there simply hasn’t been one available in that mid-range segment.

“For families with children, an SUV is essentially a large hatchback that fits their needs space-wise, and they like the high driving position from a safety point of view. We think the Chery will do incredibly well in Bermuda.”

The Tiggo is expected to arrive in May or June, with a price tag of around $36,000. It is the first vehicle to be imported under Bermuda Motors’ new deal with Chinese manufacturer Chery.

Spacious, with a sleek, rounded compact design by Italian firm Pininfarina, the 4-cylinder, 2 litre four-speed automatic model will tick a lot of boxes for many people.

The front wheel drive vehicle comes with leather seats and other features such as an anti-roll chrome-plated luggage rack, electric sunroof, Anti-Lock Braking System and Electronic Brake-force Distribution, dual front airbags, and side impact protection bars.

The Tiggo chassis has been fine-tuned by British car firm Lotus, giving it extra stability.

Its versatile space and loading options will also be appreciated by families.

Seats can be folded in half, double-folded or tilted, providing numerous configurations to accommodate large or awkward loads and offering up to 790 cubic litres of cargo space.

The rear hatch opens from the side instead of vertically, and with a flat truck floor and adjustable luggage board, the Tiggo is easy to load and unload.

It also features extra touches like a multi-functional steering wheel that can not only be adjusted downwards and upwards to meet different driving demands but also includes sound control buttons and a side airbag switch function button.

The sound system includes four-channel speakers and is equipped with a six-CD memory function and USB capability to plug in MP3 players.

The driver’s seat has six adjustable ergonomic options and has a heating function for those chilly winter mornings.

Under the bonnet, the Tiggo features a Dynamic Variable Valve Timing engine that uses advanced air intake and exhaust techniques to ensure high efficiency and high torque, but low fuel consumption, low emission and lower maintenance costs.
