FRIDAY, FEB. 17: If you’re interested in starting a business, and want to keep your start-up costs low, Don Mackenzie has a solution for you.
His New Venture Holdings is the parent company of Suite Solutions – a business on Mill Creek Road that can help in three ways.
The company offers fully furnished, turnkey office space for a minimum one month rental. The space comes with access to meeting rooms as well as reception and concierge services to support a client’s business.
Office Solutions also offers a virtual office service that will answer the telephone and handle mail services for companies or individuals that require back office support and meeting room access without the need for dedicated office space.
It also offers training and meeting room spaces, which can be used as training room spaces for up to 50 people.
Suite Solutions has been in business since October and made a big advertising blitz during the recent Super Bowl.
Mr Mackenzie said 65 per cent of the office space is currently occupied with clients including lawyers, hedge funds, start-ups, trusts and a variety of small businesses.
He said: “There are business centres around the world who do this sort of thing where you can get an office space for a day or a month.”
Mr MacKenzie, who also owns Island Self Storage, said it was a “business model
That had been proven elsewhere in the world and for some reason had not been tried in Bermuda.
“There’s no reason why Bermuda shouldn’t have temporary or serviced office space for the simple fact we have a lot of companies who come here from overseas and would like to get office space without long-term leasing commitments.”
He said it runs counter to the business model of getting commitments to office space, then finish completing a building.
“We’ve actually built the offices, furnished them and kitted them out and our model is a one month minimum, but you can also come in for one day.
“So we’ve turned the market around and offered our customers complete office flexibility.”
To assist the companies that rent the space, Office Solutions has two full-time concierges, Fawn Burgess and Teresa Whitter.
“Small businesses love it they can come in here and not make long-term commitments and get fantastic service thanks to these two ladies.
“We can help them have a very professional identity. We answer their phone… plus with access to our meeting rooms, they can provide a very professional environment to their clients.”
Ms Burgess said the office spaces come in two sizes 120 feet or 300 feet, but some businesses, like the Bermuda Hospital Board’s Charitable Trust rents out two rooms.
She said the room is configured to the client’s need so even the room size may be 300 feet, some may want one desk, and another three.
“We’re here to provide for the client.”
Ms Burgess said they have one client who wants help in arranging meetings so Office Solutions is managing the incoming RSVPs.
The company is even helping manage some services for political candidates.
Ms Whitter said she has enjoyed working for the company.
“I’ve been in a lot of office buildings and this is definitely different. It’s sleek and modern and glass — It’s almost like Apple headquarters. It’s very modern and fresh.”
Mr Mackenzie added: “We spent money to create a good environment, so even though it’s temporary, these are people’s offices, it’s their identity. We wanted to help create a professional look for them.”
