A sister hotel of Bermuda's Coco Reef has won a prestigious award.

Coco Reef Tobago - owned by Bermudian John Jefferis - scooped the World Travel Award for the Caribbean's Leading Hotel.

Bermudian architectural firm Cooper and Gardner, led by John Gardner, were the project architects when the resort was developed 12 years ago.

The awards have been described as the Oscars of the travel and tourism industry by the Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Jefferis said: "I am extremely proud to have received this award on behalf of Coco Reef Tobago.

"In these times of boring multi-national chains, I am proud the managers and staff at Coco Reef Tobago have been recognised as being exceptional."

The $2,000 per night Sunset Villa at Coco Reef Tobago has welcomed celebrity guests such as Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross.
